AI’s Impact on the Environment Is Absolutely Horrifying, New Paper Finds

A fresh paper reveals the environmental impact of artificial intelligence is crippling. Data centers supporting AI are emitting massive amounts of pollution through reliance on fossil fuel generators. The demand for AI infrastructure is only set to escalate, exacerbating the problem. According to a study published in the journal NPJ Climate Action, AI is actually giving the fossil fuel industry a significant boost.

Researchers found that AI is being leveraged by the industry to boost productivity, extract more oil, and boost profits, largely eclipsing any benefits AI might bring to renewable energy sources. The study's authors, former Microsoft managers now focused on sustainability research, argue that AI's environmental impact significantly surpasses emissions linked to data centers.

They refer to the additional pollution enabled by AI as "enabled emissions," which far outweighs the pollution reductions from renewable energy advancements. The boom in AI could lead to three to thirteen times more fossil fuel emissions than the pollution already released by data centers. This close relationship between AI and the oil and gas sectors is illustrated by partnerships like Microsoft's 20-year contract with Chevron for a large natural gas plant and Amazon's construction of the largest fossil fuel plant in the United States.

Holly Alpine, co-author of the study, expressed frustration at the narrow focus on operational emissions of AI data centers, emphasizing the critical role AI plays in the fossil fuel industry. The growing backlash against AI data centers is only the tip of the iceberg, with the true environmental consequences of the AI boom likely to be far worse.

The authors now call for stricter "guardrails" to curb emissions and steer away from a climate-negative future.
