8,150 loaves of Seoul bread go to low-income residents ahead of Liberation Day

The Seoul Metropolitan Government and bakery Koryodang delivered 8,150 loaves of Seoul Bread to low-income and elderly residents in advance of Liberation Day on August 15, commemorating South Korea's 1945 liberation from Japanese colonial rule. In addition to the bread, the city provided thank-you boxes containing Seoul Bread and Seoul-branded items to 25 low-income veterans and their families across five neighborhoods.

Koryodang, established in 1945, co-developed Seoul Bread with the city government. In April, the bakery introduced a reduced-sugar red bean bun and a butter-free whole wheat loaf, which have collectively sold over 90,000 units. As part of a brand-use agreement, Koryodang allocates a portion of its sales proceeds to social contribution programs, including this week's donation.

The bread will be available at food markets throughout the year, where low-income residents can choose items within an individual point allowance, rather than waiting in line for traditional food distribution. The city operates four such markets and plans to open a fifth. At a ceremony at Seoul Station's storehouse on Friday, Koryodang and the Seoul Metropolitan Government honored the recipients of the bread and thank-you boxes.
