2027: FG Calls on Youths to Participate in Electoral Process

The Federal Government has urged Nigerian youths to actively participate in the upcoming 2027 general election, aiming to drive the economic growth and development they envision for the country. This call comes amidst concerns over declining trust, voter apathy, misinformation, vote buying, electoral violence, and the perception among young people that their votes do not make a difference.

Dr. Olukemi Afolayan, Director of Civic, Values, and Democracy Education at the National Orientation Agency (NOA), emphasized that Nigeria's young population plays a crucial role in shaping the nation's future and that their involvement in the electoral process is vital for the quality of democracy. The NOA believes that civic education and values reorientation are essential for enabling citizens to understand the importance of their vote and responsibilities as voters.

Prof. Ajibade Abiodun Michael, the keynote speaker, urged the government to invest in reclaiming the voting rights of citizens and enfranchising a new generation of leaders. He highlighted that while the right to vote is a fundamental aspect of democracy, it is often undermined by tactics such as voter suppression, manipulation of electoral processes, and gerrymandering.

The Executive Director of the Justice, Development and Peace Caritas Initiative, Rev. Fr Sebastian Sanni, emphasized the importance of placing young people at the forefront of Nigeria's democratic conversation, noting their numbers, energy, creativity, and capacity. The roundtable discussion served as a platform for stakeholders to reflect on the gains made in Nigeria's democratic journey, identify challenges in the electoral process, and propose solutions to strengthen democracy.
