10 years later, two convicted for 18-year-old man’s murder in Surat

In 2016, two men were convicted for the murder of an 18-year-old man in Surat, India. The incident occurred over a petty dispute, with the two convicted individuals allegedly stabbing the victim to death. The court acquitted two others, who were also arrested for the murder but deemed "criminals". All four were juveniles at the time of the crime.

The Juvenile Justice Court heard the proceedings regarding the murder of Babu Nagarkar, a resident of Adajan area in Surat. An altercation took place between Nagarkar and the four youths over a minor issue on June 5, 2016, leading to the stabbing death of Nagarkar the following day. Nagarkar's father was also injured during the altercation when he tried to intervene.

The four juveniles were booked under various IPC sections, including murder, attempted murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, and carrying a deadly weapon. They were arrested on June 7 and released on bail on June 18, 2016. During the trial, the prosecution argued that the act committed by the juveniles was serious and brutal, and that appropriate legal action was necessary to teach them the consequences of violating the law.

The court ordered that the two juveniles who played a major role in the assault be placed in an observation home for three years, while the other two juveniles were released with specific conditions. The court emphasized that the convicted juveniles should receive counseling and rehabilitation facilities. It also noted that juvenile crimes are increasing and that juvenile No. 1 and 2 were actively involved in the incident.

The court deemed it unjust to release juveniles No. 1 and 2 on probation, citing the severity of their crimes and the potential negative example they could set for society.
