1,259 e-waste containers targeted for shipment by year-end

Klang: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) at Port Klang aims to ship 1,259 containers of electronic waste (e-waste) out of the country by the end of the year, according to Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal, the agency's commander. The operation, a joint effort between MCBA, the Port Klang Authority, and the Customs Department, has achieved initial success.

So far, 148 containers have been dispatched in the first phase, while the second phase has resulted in the shipment of 255 out of the 533 containers available. The third phase, commencing October 1, will handle the remaining 578 containers, containing an estimated eight million kilograms of e-waste, pending further investigations.

All containers involved have been detained since 2024, and no containers carrying e-waste have been detected re-entering Malaysia, although some have returned with other commercial goods. The Customs Department and MCBA have performed inspections based on the recorded list, and those containers were found not to contain e-waste.

Nik Ezanee emphasized the efficiency of the scanner machines at Port Klang, noting that while there are weaknesses, the agency is continuously working to improve its services.
