Why Saint Janet switched from gospel to sexually explicit songs — Backup singer

Sunkanmi, also known as Suko, was a backup singer for Saint Janet, the late Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician. Suko explained that Saint Janet switched from gospel Juju to sexually explicit songs after realizing it attracted more audience engagement, bookings, and money at social events. Suko had known Saint Janet for over 25 years and joined her band after she transitioned from being a backup singer for Nurse Kenge.

Initially, Saint Janet combined Juju with gospel music, rehearsing in a Celestial Church. Their first studio recording was unremarkable, and their later projects did not generate significant interest. Saint Janet was known for her hardworking nature and performed at various events, including weddings, bars, and beer parlours, but struggled to garner a large audience with her gospel songs.

Suko revealed that Saint Janet began experimenting with a sexually explicit style, incorporating happenings at social events into her performances to create a form of entertainment. This new style led to more bookings from clubs and bars, while still allowing Saint Janet to maintain her gospel music inspiration.
