When bail and parole put communities at risk again

The recent shooting at Reiger Park on the East Rand serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in balancing rehabilitation and public safety. While identifying the perpetrator and recovering firearms are crucial steps, they are merely the tip of the iceberg. Communities living under the constant threat of violence cannot afford a justice system that only surfaces after tragedies occur.

The public has a right to expect that offenders, particularly those with a history of violent behavior, are subject to rigorous risk assessments and monitoring when released on bail or parole. This is not merely a matter of concern for residents accustomed to gangsterism, but a fundamental issue that affects all community members.

The children who witness this cycle of violence and crime are profoundly impacted, growing up in an environment where gunfire, gangs, and fear are normalized. It is incumbent upon parents to instill values, discipline, and guidance in their children, but the responsibility does not end there.
