WhatsApp Fights Back Against Scammers With New AI Alert Tool

Meta has introduced a new Scam Alert tool for WhatsApp to combat scam messages, according to their announcement on Wednesday. This optional feature, currently in beta testing, utilizes an on-device machine learning model that scans incoming text messages from unknown senders and flags them as potential scams without accessing the user's private conversations.

To participate, users must enable the Scam Alert tool in the app's settings. Once activated, the AI tool operates in the background, analyzing communication patterns associated with scams, such as urgent tones, requests for personal information, and trust-building tactics used in romance scams. If a message is flagged, WhatsApp displays a banner warning the recipient, who can then choose to block the sender, report the conversation, ignore the warning, or trust the sender despite the warning.

The latter option removes the warning flag for future messages from that sender. Users can also contribute to improving the tool's accuracy by sharing the last five messages with a trusted sender directly with WhatsApp, but this requires opting in. The Scam Alert feature is currently in limited beta and Meta has not yet set a timeline for its full public release.
