What AI doesn’t tell you: Your stories matter

A recent study reveals that AI-written short stories might outshine those crafted by human authors in terms of engagement. The research, published in the journal Judgment and Decision Making, involved providing participants with six short stories - three penned by humans and three generated by ChatGPT. Each AI-generated story was crafted with a similar theme as its human counterpart.

Despite being told the origin of each story, participants rated the AI-written tales higher on the basis of their engagement. This finding is not unexpected, as the use of AI in creative writing has raised questions about authenticity and the essence of human experience. The controversy surrounding the Commonwealth Short Story Prize, where a regional winner was accused of using AI to generate his story, highlights the urgency of these concerns.

Writing is a deeply personal act, leaving an indelible mark on the world, even as it grapples with time, fear, vanity, memory, and mortality. The AI might be able to replicate the brevity of Ernest Hemingway or Fredric Brown's works, but can it truly capture the essence of what makes human writing unique?
