US Attorney confirms no meth was found in van of Texas man shot by immigration officers

U.S. Attorney Aaron Reitz has stated that tests on a white crystal-like substance found in the van of a Texas man killed by immigration officers did not detect methamphetamine. The van belonged to Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national who had lived without legal status in the U.S. for 35 years and operated a homebuilding business.

On July 7, ICE officers chased Salgado Araujo's van through Houston streets and subsequently shot him through the window while he was transporting his construction crew. The Department of Homeland Security initially claimed Salgado Araujo had tried to run over an ICE officer, prompting an FBI search of the van. The Salgado family and their attorney, David Donatti of the ACLU of Texas, dispute this account, alleging that ICE officers were never in danger and that the substance was a homemade electrolyte mixture used to hydrate workers in the heat.
