UP Plans 45-Drain Sewage Control Network To Clean Gomti River In Lucknow Under Namami Gange

Lucknow's Yogi Government is committed to tackling river pollution through the Namami Gange program. A key initiative involves constructing a comprehensive 45-drain sewage control network to clean the Gomti River. By tapping and diverting sewage from identified drains, the government aims to prevent direct discharge into the river and enhance sewage treatment capacity.

The city's projected population of 45.56 lakh in 2026 serves as the basis for estimating sewage generation, which stands at around 546.77 MLD. However, actual discharge is about 880.70 MLD, with 690.33 MLD flowing through drains and 190.71 MLD through the sewer network. The government has installed 10 STPs, providing a combined treatment capacity of approximately 629.5 MLD.

A drone survey identified 45 drains discharging into the Gomti, with plans underway to treat sewage from these drains by linking them to existing STPs. Notably, the Barikalan STP will treat 3.5 MLD of sewage from five drains, while the Loniyapurwa STP will handle 50 MLD from two drains. The Gomti River runs for about 30 kilometers through Lucknow, passing through 110 wards and roughly 7.52 lakh households, of which 53.32 percent are connected to the sewerage network.

The government's action plan includes constructing additional STPs with capacities of 160 MLD, 65 MLD, 150 MLD, and 65 MLD, as well as upgrading existing STPs and repairing associated drains. Once implemented, these measures aim to significantly reduce sewage pollution in the Gomti River.
