Ukrainian drones overwhelm U.S. forces during major NATO exercise

Ukrainian drone operators skillfully engaged and targeted American troops and armored vehicles during a NATO training exercise in Germany, revealing U.S. weaknesses in drone warfare, according to The Wall Street Journal on August 12. This revelation comes in the wake of recent American military setbacks in Iran, underscoring the U.S.'s vulnerability to drones, despite the Pentagon's long-standing investment in unmanned systems.

The disappointing performance of American forces in Germany highlighted the critical lessons learned from the ongoing war in Ukraine, which centers on the use of short-range combat drones. The April and May drills, known as Combined Resolve, aimed to assess troops' proficiency in operating and defending against the growing number of small UAVs utilized in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

NATO exercises, designed to simulate real combat scenarios, often include Ukrainian forces, allowing them to share their expertise with allied troops. British and Swedish exercises have also yielded similar results, with Ukrainians consistently outperforming their counterparts. Eliot Cohen, a scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, emphasized the urgent need for the U.S. military to master drone warfare, as their current performance has been lacking.

Approximately 3,500 American troops participated in the exercise, tasked with attacking a fortified position defended by opposing forces. The opposing forces were bolstered by Ukrainian troops from the 412th Nemesis Unmanned Systems Brigade. According to American officials, Ukrainian drone operators successfully destroyed American armored vehicles during the drills.

The U.S. troops sent heavy armored vehicles into battle, which were easily identifiable to Ukrainian reconnaissance drones. After the drones located their targets, bomber drones and FPV (first-person view) drones were deployed to destroy the vehicles. Ukrainian drones caused such rapid damage to the American vehicles that they had to be replaced or "respawned" to maintain the exercise's momentum, as reported by the Journal.

The U.S. Army is not the first force to face defeat at the hands of Ukrainian drones. British, Estonian, and other NATO forces, including American troops, were similarly overwhelmed during exercises in the Baltic region last May. In August, The New York Times reported that Taiwan is bolstering its military capabilities by studying Ukraine's drone tactics, as it accelerates drone and unmanned surface vessel production in preparation for a potential conflict with China.

The war in Ukraine has become a crucial reference point for Taiwanese military officials, who have learned from the Ukrainian forces' effective use of relatively inexpensive and agile drones against a much stronger adversary.
