UK defends seizing shadow fleet tanker after Putin threat

The UK government defended its seizure of a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the English Channel following a threat from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The tanker, named Smyrtos, was intercepted and boarded by Royal Marines Commandos in June to disrupt the sanctioned vessel. Captain Ajay Pant has been charged with breaching Russian sanctions for allegedly supplying or delivering prohibited Russian oil.

Russian President Putin has accused Western nations of seizing Russian vessels, labeling such actions as piracy and banditry. He warned against seizing more Russian tankers, stating that Russia would respond in kind, not necessarily in the same waters but wherever deemed necessary. Russia claims to have over 700 vessels in its shadow fleet, carrying 75% of its sanctioned oil, a crucial resource for the Kremlin's illegal war in Ukraine.

Putin threatened Western countries against seizing more tankers, warning of potential retaliation beyond the immediate waters.

In response to Putin's warnings, the UK government stated that their armed forces and law-enforcement officers boarded the Smyrtos in compliance with international law. The government emphasized that the UK's actions are aimed at disrupting shadow fleet vessels and deterring harmful maritime activity that fuels Russia's war with Ukraine.

Unlike Russia's shadow fleet, the UK's armed forces and commercial vessels operate in accordance with international maritime law. The Smyrtos remains detained by British authorities at a port near Weymouth, with the ship owner responsible for its upkeep, including provisions for the crew members, 22 of whom were repatriated in July.
