Uefa takes inspiration from European Union in plan to oust Gianni Infantino and reform Fifa

The Uefa-led coalition is contemplating proposals to alter Fifa's presidency structure and governance, with the intention of diminishing the presidency's influence and forcing out current holder Gianni Infantino. Infantino's continued tenure has fueled an ongoing conflict, stemming from the unsuccessful Fifa Forward Enterprise plan. As the crisis persists, Uefa and their associates have been devising plans for the future.

Recently, numerous football leaders convened in Salzburg for the Uefa Super Cup, the first in-person gathering since the Fifa crisis erupted. Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin held multiple meetings during the event, with Confederation of African Football chief Patrice Motsepe's attendance considered particularly noteworthy due to Caf's earlier support for Infantino.

Among the topics discussed in Salzburg were proposals for an impartial examination of Fifa's governance and drafting a document to outline the body's future structure and principles. Some believe these discussions focus primarily on Fifa, rather than the continental confederations, which may be linked to plans for rotating the presidency among the continental bodies, akin to the European Union and other multinational organizations.

Essentially, this would preclude Fifa from ever having another president with Infantino's or his predecessors' level of power. Additionally, Uefa and their allies aim to strengthen the administration surrounding the presidency, transforming it into a robust civil service. Their primary objective is to effect change in Fifa's leadership and governance structure as the minimum requirement in this ongoing crisis.
