Two injured as train derails in southeast England

Two individuals sustained serious injuries when a train carrying approximately 150 passengers derailed near Lewes in east Sussex, England. The British Transport Police (BTP) declared a major incident as three carriages detached from the Southern train, leaving passengers stranded inside. The train, en route from London Victoria to Eastbourne, has been safely evacuated.

Yana Ludwig, a 56-year-old American passenger, described the incident as "completely terrifying." She recounted the sound of banging followed by a sudden tilt, lasting what seemed like "ten seconds" before the carriage crashed onto the side. Ludwig sustained injuries and was propped up beside another passenger. Despite the ordeal, she noted the unity among passengers, checking on each other's well-being.

Authorities believe two patients are facing serious injuries, while nine others have sustained less severe injuries. These individuals have been assessed and treated on-site, with some transported to nearby hospitals. The South East Coast Ambulance Service transported non-emergency passengers to a local community center for support.

The incident remains complex and ongoing, involving multiple agencies at Landport Road in Lewes. Fire engines, ambulances, and police have been stationed along the road, with a double-decker bus awaiting passengers at the community hub. One person was seen being taken away in an ambulance.

Photos circulating online showed at least two train carriages lying on their sides, with two passengers standing atop. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed deep concern over the incident and is collaborating with the rail industry and local partners to assist affected passengers. BTP Assistant Chief Constable Ian Drummond-Smith reassured the public that they are assisting the Rail Accident Investigation Branch in determining the cause of the derailment, promising to provide further updates as they become available.
