Train crew killed as Russian attacks kill at least 8, injure 50 across Ukraine over past day

Russian drone attacks killed eight people and injured 50 others in Ukraine over the past day, local authorities reported on Aug. 13. A Russian jet-powered attack drone struck a passenger train in Odesa Oblast, killing the driver and his assistant, according to Ukrainian Railways CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, who shared the news on Facebook.

The train was en route to a station for passenger evacuation when the drone threat was detected; however, the locomotive crew was unable to fully stop and evacuate themselves in time. No passengers sustained injuries in this incident.

Russian forces launched 133 Shahed-type drones overnight on Aug. 13, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 111 of the drones across northern, southern, and eastern Ukraine. Drone strikes were reported at 15 locations, while debris from downed targets was found at 16 locations.

In Kherson Oblast, Russian forces targeted 28 settlements, including the regional center of Kherson, resulting in three deaths and 19 injuries over the past day, as reported by the local military administration. In Sumy Oblast, Russian attacks injured seven people, while in Donetsk Oblast, Russian forces killed two individuals and injured six others in the eastern region, Governor Vadym Filashkin stated.

Zaporizhzhia Oblast reported one death and four injuries from Russian attacks over the past day, according to local authorities. In northeastern Kharkiv Oblast, eight people, including a 15-year-old boy, were injured in Russian attacks, with Governor Oleh Syniehubov reporting the incident. In northern Chernihiv Oblast, a 10-year-old girl suffered an injury from Russian drone attacks, as reported by Governor Viacheslav Chaus.

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast recorded five injuries following more than 10 drone and artillery attacks, with Governor Oleksandr Hanzha providing the information.
