Think first before investing in more BRT lines, say experts

Selangor should carefully evaluate the necessity and integration of additional bus rapid transit (BRT) lines before proceeding, according to transport experts. Wan Agyl Wan Hassan, a transport advocacy group founder, suggests the state should analyze travel patterns and gaps in existing services to determine if BRT is the best solution. He recommends using BRT to supplement ordinary and feeder bus services, rather than replacing them.

Ng Sze Han, chairman of Selangor's investment, trade, and mobility committee, announced plans to expand the BRT network beyond the 5.4km Sunway line, potentially including Puchong, Glenmarie, and Kwasa Damansara. He cited lessons from Jakarta's BRT network. Wan Agyl asserts that the objective should be a better public transport network, with Selangor first identifying broken areas before selecting the appropriate solution.

Transport planning consultant Goh Bok Yen points out that the Klang Valley already has sufficient public transport options; the issue lies in their lack of integration. He highlights that feeder buses are stuck in traffic due to limited bus lanes and insufficient priority at traffic lights. Goh questions whether authorities are willing to allocate more road space to buses and less to private cars.

While he acknowledges BRT could fill gaps between rail lines, such as connecting with an LRT corridor, he stresses the importance of proper integration and sufficient road space.
