The Assumption: Your Guide to Supermarket Opening Hours on Saturday

Supermarkets across Alicante province will alter their opening hours on Saturday, August 15, as Spain observes the national public holiday known as the Feast of the Assumption. However, the new schedules vary greatly depending on the specific supermarket chain, location, and individual branch.

Most Mercadona stores will open from 9am to 3pm, allowing customers to shop during the morning hours before closing for the remainder of the public holiday. Yet, approximately 320 Mercadona outlets situated in coastal and tourist destinations will retain their traditional summer timetable of 9am to 10pm. Notable coastal locations with extended hours include Benidorm.

Consum stores exhibit even more varied opening hours. The Alicante-based Pintor Baeza store will open from 9am to 2:30pm, while Vicente Ramos branches will be open from 9am to 9:30pm. Dénia and Calpe stores will operate until 9:30pm, and Gran Alacant stores may remain open until 10pm. Certain Charter supermarkets belonging to the Consum group will also be open.

Carrefour's opening arrangements differ by hypermarket, supermarket, and smaller express stores. Tourist areas generally expect Carrefour branches to open between 9am and 10pm. Some Express stores may extend their hours, while others might only operate in the morning. Lidl will similarly open numerous Alicante branches, with stores on Avenida Doctor Jiménez Díaz in Alicante remaining open from 9am to 10pm. Similar hours are anticipated at several other locations catering to tourists.

Aldi has announced wider opening hours across the province. Gran Alacant's supermarket will be open from 8:30am to 10pm, while Calpe and Ondara stores will follow the same schedule. Petrer will open from 9am to 9:30pm.

Overseas supermarkets, specializing in British and international products, have reduced their public holiday trading hours. San Fulgencio, Quesada, Orihuela Costa, and Jávea stores will operate from 9am to 6pm. Other chains such as DIA, Masymas, Alcampo, Supercor, and Hipercor will determine their individual schedules.

Convenience stores and petrol station shops attached to supermarkets are most likely to maintain open hours throughout the holiday. Customers are strongly advised to check the official store locator or call their chosen supermarket prior to visiting, as opening hours may still be modified locally.
