Thai PM says defense ties with US won’t be used to negotiate tariffs

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who also holds the position of interior minister, met with US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby on Thursday at Government House in Bangkok. During their discussions, Anutin reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to strengthening its 193-year defense alliance with the United States, stating that defense cooperation will not be used as leverage in trade negotiations.

Both countries aim to enhance their alliance to address evolving security threats and maintain regional stability. Anutin highlighted the historical significance of the Thai-US military relationship, emphasizing its positive impact on both nations. Colby, in turn, expressed confidence in Thailand's role as an important US ally and stressed the strategic importance of the US in the region.

The two sides agreed to bolster security cooperation, focusing on modern security challenges, the modernization of Thailand's armed forces, and defense industry cooperation. Additionally, they discussed enhancing law enforcement efforts to combat transnational crime along the Thailand-Cambodia border, with Anutin expressing gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his support in easing tensions in the region.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to international law, good-neighborly relations, and a peaceful resolution through bilateral mechanisms, including the implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Accords. In terms of trade, Anutin reiterated Thailand's intention to swiftly conclude an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the United States, vowing to maintain the strong alliance while expanding cooperation that benefits the people of both countries and promotes regional peace, security, and stability.
