Tata Sons Succession: Tata Trusts To Form Selection Committee After Chandrasekaran Steps Down

Tata Trusts will commence the search for a new chairman of Tata Sons following N Chandrasekaran's decision not to seek another term upon the conclusion of his current tenure on February 20, 2027. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust announced its trustees had passed a resolution to establish a Selection Committee and commence the succession process at the earliest, in line with the Articles of Association of Tata Sons.

This decision followed Chandrasekaran's communication to the Tata Sons board on February 24, indicating he would not offer himself for reappointment after months of uncertainty over his continuation in the role. The Trust commended Chandrasekaran's leadership of Tata Sons and the broader Tata Group over nearly a decade, while emphasizing its commitment to ensuring a smooth and timely transition of leadership, safeguarding the group's long-term interests and values.

The succession process comes ahead of Tata Sons' annual general meeting scheduled for August 18, where shareholders were expected to consider his continued directorship following his planned retirement by rotation. Tata Trusts, holding approximately 66% ownership of Tata Sons, had previously endorsed a five-year extension of Chandrasekaran's executive chairmanship in 2025; however, this proposal encountered reservations over the performance of certain Tata Group companies.

Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987 and served as head of Tata Consultancy Services before assuming the role of Tata Sons chairman in 2017.
