Swiatek into first final of her 'toughest season'

Iga Swiatek has secured her first final of her challenging season at the Canadian Open. The Pole defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the semi-finals, her first WTA final of the year. The 25-year-old has not reached a final since winning Cincinnati last year and only reached one semi-final this season. Seventh seed Swiatek acknowledged the difficulties of her season, stating it has been "the toughest one in my life" but the week has been "really positive and inspirational for me."

Meanwhile, Australia Open champion Elena Rybakina advanced to her first WTA final in three sets, despite her loss of the opening set to Coco Gauff. Winning four consecutive games to clinch the second set, Rybakina won the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. The 27-year-old admitted she rushed the first set, but is glad to have won again in three sets.

This will be the 13th time Swiatek and Rybakina face off professionally, both players winning six matches against each other. Their last meeting - their only match of 2026 - saw Rybakina win in straight sets in the quarter-finals of Rybakina's Australian Open-winning campaign.

In the men's singles of the Canadian Open in Montreal, Ben Shelton will face fellow American Brandon Nakashima in the final. Shelton will look to retain the title and win his seventh ATP tournament, while Nakashima aims for his first Masters 1,000 title.
