He recalled that "I waited for my father's message at the end of every game, but it never came, and then I realized the seriousness of the situation."

Messi vowed to play one more match to see his father, regardless of the distance, and vowed to go all the way to the end. He also expressed his desire to bring a trophy back if they won, but he did not, due to his father's failing health. Messi also noted that he never felt physically well during the tournament.
