South Korea's red line on arming Ukraine

South Korea is facing a dilemma over Ukraine's request for weapons and air defense systems as North Korea becomes a more significant military partner for Russia in its war against Ukraine. Seoul must weigh its own security concerns against the appeal of helping Ukraine defend its territory and sovereignty.

North Korea has indeed deepened its military support for Russia, with North Korean forces reportedly deployed to the battlefield and North Korean ballistic missiles and other weapons being used. In return, North Korea gains valuable combat experience, military know-how, and advanced Russian technology from its partnership with Russia.

Seoul recognizes the grave threat posed by North Korea's growing involvement in the conflict. The prospect of North Korean forces returning from Ukraine with enhanced modern warfare skills is a direct security concern for Seoul. However, this does not mean that South Korea should cross the line by supplying lethal weapons or sophisticated air defense systems to Ukraine.

Seoul's decision to remain restrained is not indifference towards Ukraine. It is a calculated assessment of its own survival and security interests. Zelenskyy's appeal is understandable, given Ukraine's fight for its territory and sovereignty. However, South Korea must carefully consider its own red line before committing to supplying Ukraine with lethal weapons or advanced air defense systems.
