Sedina Tamakloe released from custody two weeks after Court of Appeal acquittal

Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu, the former head of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre, is now a free woman. She emerged from custody after roughly two weeks following an appellate tribunal's acquittal of all criminal charges against her. The reversal of her conviction came two weeks after the Court of Appeal overturned her earlier conviction.

Her legal team successfully contested the initial verdict handed down by the trial court, which led to her eventual physical release from state custody. The state prosecutors' attempts to maintain her detention were thwarted when they officially withdrew their application to keep her in custody. The appellate ruling removed the final procedural obstacle to her freedom.

The legal saga surrounds her tenure as head of the state institution from November 2013 to January 2017. She was charged with seventy-eight counts, including conspiracy, theft, financial loss to the public, money laundering, unauthorized payments, and procurement violations. Despite her extradition from the United States in June 2026 and immediate arrest, she was eventually released after the appellate court's victory.

The state intends to challenge this decision at the Supreme Court, though for now, her acquittal remains effective. This case highlights the balance between strong anti-corruption measures and the protection of fundamental appellate rights within democratic governance.
