SBU uncovers Russian intelligence network targeting Ukrainian F-16 and Mirage 2000 air bases

Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has uncovered a Russian intelligence network targeting Ukrainian F-16 and Mirage 2000 air bases, according to a report on August 13. The 14-person network, coordinated by SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad, was responsible for gathering information to enable attacks on Ukrainian military airfields hosting the fighter jets.

The group recruited a Lviv resident who administered a Telegram channel focused on aviation. This individual was discovered after posting photographs of Ukrainian military aircraft in pro-Kremlin online chats, attracting the attention of Russian intelligence. The agent then involved 13 subscribers with high-quality equipment and living near Ukrainian military aviation infrastructure, who were tasked with photographing Ukrainian airfields, aircraft, crews, and technical personnel.

The photographs were stored online for the Telegram channel's use, while schedules for combat helicopter takeoffs and landings were also provided to Russia. Searches of the suspects' residences uncovered digital photography equipment and photographs of Ukrainian Defense Forces aviation facilities. The SBU has blocked four Telegram channels and 10 specialized groups distributing such information.

Notices of suspicion have been served to the detained Russian agent, an alleged accomplice, and a Ukrainian serviceman over crimes against Ukraine's national security.
