Saudi SFDA launches NADR program to accelerate rare disease drug development

Riyadh - The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has announced the launch of the New Accelerator Program for Drugs in Rare Diseases (NADR) to expedite the creation and accessibility of medications for rare diseases. This specialized initiative operates within the SFDA's regulatory system, with the objective of accelerating the development, assessment, and approval of treatments for rare diseases. NADR intends to bolster researchers and developers while propelling healthcare innovation.

By offering scientific and regulatory incentives, the program aims to hasten patient access to essential treatments and elevate Saudi Arabia's standing among nations supporting research and innovative healthcare solutions. According to the SFDA, NADR applies to drugs designed to prevent or treat rare diseases, defined as conditions affecting less than 5 in 10,000 individuals in Saudi Arabia.

To qualify, the medicine must either lack a satisfactory current treatment in Saudi Arabia or must provide a significant clinical advantage over existing treatments. These products can be in various stages of development or already authorized by other regulatory bodies but not yet registered in Saudi Arabia.

The SFDA emphasized that enabling timely access to medications for patients with rare diseases remains a top priority. NADR provides regulatory incentives and assistance, including scientific and regulatory guidance and flexible approaches to assessing clinical evidence for small patient populations. Additionally, the program offers flexibility in procedures for registering and inspecting manufacturer sites, as well as support concerning periodic safety reports.

The establishment of NADR is part of the SFDA's broader efforts to enhance access to treatments for rare diseases, support comprehensive healthcare for patients in Saudi Arabia, and improve their overall quality of life.
