Samsung reportedly abandons plans to give the Galaxy S27 a variable-aperture camera

Samsung is reportedly abandoning plans to equip the Galaxy S27 smartphone series with a variable-aperture camera. Early rumors suggested the feature could make a return, reminiscent of the variable-aperture camera introduced on the Galaxy S9+ in 2018. This hardware allowed for physical changes in the amount of light entering the camera sensor, providing users with more flexible shooting options.

However, Samsung has reportedly decided against reintroducing the variable-aperture camera in the Galaxy S27 series. The decision came following discussions with Apple, who was reportedly planning to use the technology on the iPhone 18. However, Samsung cited manufacturing costs and thicker cameras as reasons for opting out. Additionally, the ongoing issue of "RAMageddon" has made higher camera costs a challenging proposition for the development of next-generation smartphones.

The Galaxy S27 is expected to launch early next year, and there are indications that Samsung may remove one of its telephoto lenses from the Ultra model.
