Ruto: KDF must adapt to emerging security threats

President William Ruto presided over the passing out parade of over 5,000 recruits at the Kenya Defence Forces Recruits Training School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Thursday. The President pledged that the Government would continue investing in the welfare, training, and readiness of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to tackle emerging security threats.

He highlighted the importance of strengthening capabilities in cybersecurity, intelligence, maritime security, and military medicine. Ruto emphasized that the battlefield is evolving, and KDF must be prepared to face emerging threats such as cybercrime, artificial intelligence, climate shocks, and new disease outbreaks. He also acknowledged the KDF's role in regional peace missions and stressed the need for Kenya to build its own defense model that contributes to national development.

The President pointed out that attacks may target servers instead of border posts, drones may operate without pilots, and artificial intelligence may disrupt systems and distort information. Climate shocks could displace communities and spark competition over resources, while disease outbreaks could pose a greater threat than armed adversaries.

President Ruto noted that security and development are interdependent, and security enables development while development strengthens security. He pointed out that KDF's engineering department is crucial in supporting strategic infrastructure, and military logistics play a vital role in providing support during emergencies. The President also mentioned that KDF is involved in rebuilding key infrastructure projects and shipbuilding capacity.

He congratulated the recruits on completing their demanding training and emphasized the importance of exercising judgment under pressure, leading effectively, and understanding the distinction between lawful authority and abuse. The President encouraged the recruits to be technologically literate, intellectually curious, and constitutionally grounded in their service.

He thanked the parents and guardians for raising the young Kenyans and expressed gratitude for their trust in the nation.
