Ronald Lamola: South Africa aims to boost intra-SADC trade to 50% by 2027

South Africa's International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola outlined the country's strategic goals for its upcoming chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), with a focus on boosting intra-regional trade, infrastructure development, and addressing migration issues. The SADC region, which holds nearly 30% of the world's proven critical mineral reserves, aims to increase trade between member states to 50% by 2027.

Current trade between SADC countries stands at around 20%, a figure Lamola deems insufficient given the region's potential. The African Export-Import Bank estimates that intra-Africa trade is currently valued at US$84 billion, with the SADC region contributing US$53 billion. During its term in office, South Africa plans to implement the Skukuza retreat objectives, aiming to achieve the 50% intra-SADC trade target and harness critical minerals for beneficiation at the source.

Infrastructure development, including reliable energy, efficient transport corridors, modern ports, digital networks, and dependable water systems, is also a priority. South Africa seeks to expand and modernize these systems, as manufacturing currently accounts for only 10% of the region's GDP and cannot generate the required employment.

Social and human capital development, particularly in light of Africa's young population, will also be a focus. Lamola emphasized the importance of gender equality, climate resilience, and disaster-risk management in the regional agenda. Migration will also feature prominently during South Africa's chairmanship, with the country experiencing a vigorous public debate on irregular migration, border integrity, and economic opportunities.

South Africa urges SADC member states to sign the protocol on the free movement of people to enable regular and orderly migration. The minister called for a holistic and long-lasting solution to the migration challenges facing the region, emphasizing that it should not be viewed solely as a security issue.
