Republic of Ireland FA withdraws support for Gianni Infantino as Fifa crisis rages on

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has withdrawn its support for Fifa president Gianni Infantino amidst the ongoing crisis surrounding him. This follows a letter sent by England and Wales to Fifa, joining other European nations who have pulled their support for Infantino's re-election bid in March 2027. Uefa has also called for the boycott of Fifa competitions unless Infantino is removed from office, joining Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation in accusing him of breaking trust through deception.

The FAI, which previously opposed the Fifa Forward Enterprise scheme, confirmed its decision to withdraw support in a statement following a board meeting. They expressed concerns over governance, transparency, and a lack of meaningful consultation, stating their responsibility to advocate for best practices. Northern Ireland's association has not yet withdrawn its support but shares similar concerns.

Meanwhile, Infantino's allies, including Argentina, Mexico, and the African Football Confederation, have rallied behind him, urging opponents to follow proper procedures. Six Arab national football associations also expressed continued support for Infantino, acknowledging his role in global football development.
