Reds’ Hunter Greene out for season and possibly 2027 after Tommy John surgery

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene will miss the remainder of the 2023 season and potentially the entire 2027 year following Tommy John surgery on Thursday. The procedure was necessary to repair a ligament in his right elbow. Greene, who made his first appearance of the season on July 31, had been experiencing elbow soreness since August 4.

He had previously undergone Tommy John surgery in 2019 while in the minor leagues. Greene has a 2-2 record with a 6.83 ERA in 27 2/3 innings over five starts this season. His last appearance came just last week. The Reds had announced Greene's need for surgery on Friday. Greene first joined the team on the 60-day injured list in March after undergoing surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow in March.

In April 2023, Greene signed a six-year, $53 million contract extension, including a $21 million club option for 2029. Last season, Greene spent two separate periods on the injured list with a right groin injury and six weeks due to right elbow soreness. In 2023, he also had two stints on the IL due to hip pain. Despite trade interest, the Reds decided to keep Greene, strengthening their top-of-the-rotation duo with All-Star right-hander Chase Burns.
