Punjab to Install 12,000 Cameras Under Rs. 5 Billion Safe Jail Project

The Punjab government has announced a Rs. 5 billion initiative to enhance prison security across the province. Dubbed the "Safe Jail Project," the program aims to deploy advanced technology and equipment in key facilities. Authorities plan to install over 12,000 surveillance cameras, along with 615 panic buttons, 1,525 public address systems, and 369 body cameras.

Additional security features include 82 under vehicle surveillance systems, 787 facial recognition access devices, and 133 software systems. Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi reviewed the project's progress during a meeting, noting that 80% of the required equipment has been procured and inspected. The cameras will offer facial and vehicle recognition, night vision, and anti-shake capabilities, all supported by artificial intelligence for enhanced monitoring.

The system will cover prison staff, prisoners, visitors, and various areas such as entry/exit points, offices, barracks, and even kitchens and libraries. Automatic alerts will be triggered whenever violations of prison regulations are detected. Officials have been directed to expedite the project, with Central Jail Lahore and its command center set to become operational this month.

The full implementation is expected by March 2027, with ongoing operations and maintenance provided by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority for five years post-completion.
