Peter Maher, who spent 33 years as Flames’ radio play-by-play announcer, dead at 79

Peter Maher, a former radio announcer for the Calgary Flames, has passed away at the age of 79. Maher spent 33 years serving as the team's voice on the radio. The Flames confirmed his death in a statement, remembering him for his distinctive voice. Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher began his career at CHQR radio station in 1980 when the Flames relocated from Atlanta.

He held the position until retiring after the 2013-14 season. Maher is particularly remembered for his catchphrases "Yeah, baby!" and "You can put it in the win column!" He called the Flames' championship run in 1989 and their appearances in the Cup finals in 1986 and 2004. Maher was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and received the Hockey Hall of Fame's Foster Hewitt Memorial Award in 2006.
