Passengers clamber out of train carriage after derailment in England

A train carrying passengers derailed on the south coast of England near Lewes railway station, leaving several carriages overturned. The British Transport Police, along with other emergency services, are responding to the incident approximately 72km south of London. At this time, there are no reports of any casualties. The tracks have also been reported as warped following the derailment. The train was on its way from London Victoria station to Eastbourne.

Thursday saw the UK experiencing its hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures surpassing 38°C, marking the fifth heatwave of the summer. Several train operators had warned passengers against traveling on Thursday due to potential disruptions caused by the heat. Network Rail confirmed that the derailment occurred at 3:54 pm and strongly advised the public not to attempt travel in the area due to anticipated delays or cancellations to other services.

Passengers attempting to reach Gatwick Airport might be affected by the delays or cancellations. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has stated that its officers are en route to the scene. Former Lewes MP Norman Baker suggested that the train derailed due to "landslip" or "rails buckling in the heat." Baker emphasized that the investigation will focus on ensuring the railways are safe before allowing trains to resume service, stating that repairing buckled rails could take considerable time.

Transport Minister Heidi Alexander expressed deep concern over the incident and stated that the government is working swiftly with the rail industry to assist affected passengers. Lewes MP James MacCleary confirmed reports of a train crash in the Lewes area and pledged to share more information as it becomes available, offering his thoughts to those involved. Labour MP Helena Dollimore of Hastings and Rye in East Sussex described the derailment as "deeply distressing."
