Passenger train derails in southern England

A passenger train derailed in southern England on Thursday, resulting in serious injuries for two individuals and minor injuries for nine others, according to the British Transport Police. The Southern Rail train, traveling from Victoria station in London to Eastbourne, was carrying approximately 150 people when it went off the tracks near the tourist town of Lewes.

Passenger Rob Bradley recounted the harrowing experience, describing how the train began to rock as it gained speed, causing the carriage he was in with his 6-year-old daughter to suddenly jump upward. The sudden movement sent everything forward - his laptop, AirPods, and their bags - scattering across the carriage. The train then skidded for a considerable distance before finally coming to a stop, revealing the back of the train had opened up, spewing smoke and dust into the air.

Bradley witnessed one of the flipped cars sliding down an embankment into a lower field, with another passenger reporting they had been cut when a window shattered. Aerial footage captured firefighters and paramedics attending to injured passengers at a field beside the train, with multiple ambulances and three helicopters on standby. All passengers were evacuated within roughly three hours following the incident.

The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
