Parliament Monsoon Session Live: Protest vs protest ahead of Amit Shah’s likely address

The Monsoon Session of Parliament came to a close on Thursday as the proceedings remained marred by disruptions from the Opposition parties. The session saw the Opposition boycott the usual tea gathering at the Speaker's chamber following the adjournment. Frequent interruptions were a hallmark of the session, with the Opposition demanding a discussion on allegations of police brutality against protesters at Jantar Mantar.

They also wanted an address from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the alleged police excesses during the July 20th protest. Shah, however, expressed willingness to answer the Opposition's question in the Parliament. When approached by reporters outside the Parliament, he stated that the Opposition should formally inform the Speaker whether they wish to hold a discussion, by 2 pm that day.

He also indicated his own willingness to engage in the discussion until late night today and tomorrow.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, responded harshly to Shah's remarks. He accused the Home Minister of lacking courage and criticized the Opposition for attempting a last-ditch effort to regain their position. "The balloon has burst, and now, at the last moment, they are trying to refill the gas," Gandhi remarked.

Earlier in the session, the Parliament passed bills to rename Kerala as Keralam and to amend the National Disaster Management Act. As of now, at least 19 bills have been passed, seven of which were approved in a swift 36-minute session without prior discussion.
