Osun election: Peter Obi warns against violence, urges respect for legitimate results

Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, security forces and political figures to ensure a peaceful and fair governorial election in Osun State. Making this call in a statement shared on his official social media, Obi urged all stakeholders to permit residents to elect their leaders without fear or violence.

He emphasized that Osun State belongs to its citizens and called for INEC, security forces, political parties, candidates, and other parties to remain impartial and professional throughout the election. Obi stated, "The people of Osun must be permitted to vote freely, securely, and without pressure. Their ballots must be counted accurately, safeguarded diligently, and announced in line with the genuine will of the electorate."

He appealed to those within the state to maintain peace, avoiding politicians from inciting animosity among neighbors, friends, and communities. Obi further urged politicians, supporters, influencers, and financiers outside the state to refrain from introducing violence or intimidation into the electoral process. He emphasized that their allegiance should be to Nigeria and the Constitution, not a single political party or individual.

Their responsibility is to protect every voter equally. Obi challenged INEC to guarantee the integrity of the election, from authorization and voting to the tallying and declaration of results. "Every irregularity must be dealt with seriously, and every legitimate vote must be counted," he stated. He also called upon international observers and diplomatic missions to closely monitor the election, asserting their presence could enhance confidence in the process.

He stated, "The election should illustrate that political rivalry can unfold without violence, and leadership can change through ballots rather than bloodshed." "Let every vote count. Let every voter be safeguarded. Let every legitimate result be respected. And most importantly, let peace prevail in Osun State," he added. He concluded, "Nigeria is watching. Africa is watching. The world is watching."
