Ontario makes changes to social assistance rules based on immigration status

Ontario is implementing new rules for social assistance payments that will prevent individuals without legal immigration status in Canada from receiving benefits. The annual payment, billed as $205.00 plus GST for one year, will automatically renew at $233.00 plus GST every 52 weeks, offering a 10% discount off the regular annual price of $259.35. This offer is available to new and qualified returning subscribers only, with the option to cancel at any time.

Individuals in Canada without legal immigration status or those authorized to stay on temporary visas and work permits will no longer be eligible for social assistance. Premier Doug Ford announced the changes following a tribunal ruling that awarded Ontario Works payments to a man who had entered Canada decades ago on an expired temporary work permit. Ford stated that his government would support those who have fallen on hard times but would not provide assistance to those living in Canada illegally.

The minister of children, community, and social services, Michael Parsa, announced the regulatory amendments in a press release, emphasizing that taxpayer dollars will now be directed towards individuals facing financial hardship who are legally allowed to reside in Canada. The changes aim to ensure that social assistance is only provided to those who meet the necessary legal criteria for eligibility.
