One dead, 172 rescued after Indonesian ferry from Bali catches fire

A ferry traveling between Indonesia's popular tourist destinations caught fire off the coast of Lombok on Wednesday morning, resulting in one fatality and the rescue of at least 172 people. The KM Putri Yasmin vessel departed from Padangbai port in Bali and was en route to Lembar port in Lombok when the disaster occurred in the Lombok Strait during the early hours of the day.

An immediate emergency response was launched, with over 200 personnel from various agencies, including navy ships, patrol boats, commercial vessels, and a helicopter, joining the search and rescue mission. The rescue operation faced challenging conditions, with high waves reaching up to four meters, complicating the rescue efforts.

Authorities successfully evacuated 172 survivors to ports in Bali and Lombok, including foreign nationals, and rushed the injured to local hospitals for urgent medical attention. Discrepancies in the official passenger manifests, which indicated fewer passengers than the actual number of survivors, raised concerns about maritime safety regulations in the region.

The incident comes less than a month after another fire on a ferry, KM Mutiara Sentosa 2, resulted in five deaths, with the vessel also operating above its manifest capacity. As investigations into the causes of the fires and the broader issues of safety standards enforcement continue, international observers emphasize the need for comprehensive reform to protect the millions of travelers who rely on the country's vast aquatic transportation network daily.
