NHRC Cautions Against Hate Speech Ahead of 2027 Polls

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Nigeria has warned that increasing instances of hate speech, intimidation, and divisive political rhetoric could lead to violence and chaos before the 2027 general election. The commission emphasized that such inflammatory statements by political figures and public individuals were threatening human dignity, peaceful coexistence, and citizens' right to freely participate in democracy.

Speaking at a press conference, the NHRC's Executive Secretary, Chief Tony Ojukwu, stressed the need for decisive action to prevent the escalation of dangerous rhetoric into violence. The warning was not directed at any specific political party, religious organization, ethnic group, or individual but aimed to protect Nigerians' dignity and equal worth.

Ojukwu emphasized that freedom of expression carries responsibilities and that hate speech could not be dismissed as ordinary political rhetoric. He cited historical lessons from the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, warning that sustained propaganda, denigration, and incitement could create an environment where discrimination and violence become acceptable.

The NHRC called for early identification of dangerous narratives, responsible public communication, and accountability for those crossing legal boundaries. The commission urged political parties, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and the media to promote tolerance, peace, and mutual respect rather than hatred and division.

Law enforcement agencies were also urged to respond appropriately to cases involving incitement, threats, and unlawful conduct while ensuring investigations and prosecutions comply with the Constitution and fundamental rights.
