NHIA releases GH¢35.1m to 107 districts for Free Primary Healthcare

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) disbursed GH¢35.1 million to 107 districts for the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme. This initiative, initiated in April 2026, utilizes a population-based funding model to allocate predictable budgets for preventive and community-focused healthcare services. These services encompass health screenings, maternal and child healthcare, immunizations, treatment of common illnesses, and public health education.

The FPHC program, launched by President John Dramani Mahama in Dodowa on April 15, aims to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme by concentrating on disease prevention and early detection, while the NHIS continues to fund treatment and hospital-based care. Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, NHIA's Chief Executive, stated that the program seeks to promote healthier lifestyles and enable early diagnosis, thereby mitigating the likelihood of diseases escalating and becoming more costly to treat.

In a related announcement, the NHIA transferred 13 staff members to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) following their one-year secondment. These personnel, among the original contributors to the GMTF's establishment and operations, have made significant contributions to the successful launch of the trust. Dr. Bampoe expressed pride in their accomplishments and reassured the public of the NHIA's ongoing collaboration with the GMTF to enhance healthcare delivery and health outcomes.
