NHIA launches ‘80 Campaign’ to increase active NHIS membership to 80%

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has initiated a campaign to boost active enrollment in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) from 70% to 80% by the end of 2026. The campaign, named '80 Campaign' and titled "From 70 to 80 – Let's Cover More," aims to further Ghana's Universal Health Coverage objectives by reaching the unenrolled population, retaining existing members, and ensuring that membership leads to access to quality healthcare.

The NHIS currently provides coverage for approximately 95% of diseases in Ghana, making active membership vital in safeguarding citizens from financial strain when seeking medical care.

To achieve this goal, the NHIA will ramp up community outreach, public awareness, partnerships with institutions, digital services, and targeted engagement in underserved regions. In an effort to enhance the value of NHIS membership, the Authority has increased service fees paid to certified healthcare providers by 50%. This adjustment is intended to reflect medical costs, bolster provider confidence, and ensure the long-term viability of the Scheme.

The NHIA has also reemphasized that there is no co-payment policy under the NHIS, cautioning credentialed facilities against charging members for covered services. The Authority is taking action to curb unauthorized out-of-pocket payments and guarantee that members receive the healthcare benefits they are entitled to without additional expenses.
