Netherlands hire former Barca great Xavi through 2030 World Cup

Former Barcelona star and coach Xavi Hernandez has been appointed to lead the Netherlands national team through the 2030 World Cup. The 46-year-old received a four-year contract to take over a squad that failed to progress beyond the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, losing to Morocco on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Ronald Koeman resigned as coach of the Dutch team the day following their elimination.

Xavi previously coached Barcelona from November 2021 to May 2024, guiding the team to a La Liga title in the 2022-23 season. His only prior coaching experience was a two-year stint with Al-Sadd in Qatar. Speaking about taking on the Netherlands team, Xavi remarked, "You could say that I am a bit of a son of Dutch football." He praised the country's football culture and vision of attacking football based on possession, creativity, passion, and conviction.

Xavi expressed his desire to win while maintaining those characteristics, aiming to deliver an enjoyable experience for the players and fans. He emphasized that the foundation for success is already in place and looks forward to working with the players, staff, and the Netherlands football federation on this challenge.

In his playing career, Xavi was a key midfielder for Spain, helping the team win the 2008 and 2012 UEFA European Championship and defeat the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time in the 2010 World Cup final in Johannesburg. He also won eight La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns during his time at Barcelona, often pairing with Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta in an exceptional midfield.
