Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern Takes on Bigger Role in New DC Universe

Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner is rapidly becoming a familiar face in James Gunn's burgeoning DC Universe. Fillion initially portrayed the sarcastic Green Lantern in Gunn's Superman, where Gardner served as a member of the Justice Gang, a group of superheroes operating under businessman Maxwell Lord. Despite his caustic demeanor, Gardner proved his worth by assisting Superman in a crucial moment.

Since then, Fillion has further expanded his role within the DC Universe, appearing in the second season of Peacemaker and set to return in HBO's Lanterns. This series stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. However, Fillion's Guy Gardner is about to take on a different medium.

Tom King, the writer and showrunner of Mister Miracle, announced to Entertainment Weekly that Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner in the upcoming animated series. King expressed his delight at Fillion's larger-than-life performance, emphasizing that his energy remains consistent across live-action and animation. The casting decision also aligns with DC Studios' strategy of having actors reprise their characters in various formats.

This approach was previously employed in Creature Commandos, an animated series set within Gunn's DC Universe, which featured actors from the live-action DCU.

Fillion's growing presence across DC projects may indicate a broader role for Guy Gardner in the expanding universe. In DC Comics, Gardner held a prominent position within the Justice League International, alongside characters such as Mister Miracle, Blue Beetle, and Booster Gold. Maxwell Lord, a key figure in the team, is also connected to the Superman iteration portrayed by Sean Gunn.

This link could prove particularly significant in Gunn's DC Universe, as Gardner is now set to appear in Mister Miracle, alongside his future roles in Lanterns and Man of Tomorrow.
