Mpohor-Fiase Assembly arrests 26 in anti-galamsey operation

The Mpohor-Fiase District Assembly has stepped up its battle against illegal mining following the arrest of 26 suspected miners during a security operation in the area. Intelligence-led efforts targeted around 10 suspected mining sites, with assistance from various government agencies including the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, and Ghana Immigration Service.

Despite some suspects fleeing the sites, 26 individuals were apprehended and 14 pumping machines, eight motorbikes, and two gallons of fuel were seized. The suspects are now in custody at the Sekondi Central Police Station to assist with investigations and legal proceedings. District Chief Executive Sophia Aubyn revealed that the District Security Committee agreed to expand the anti-illegal mining taskforce to bolster the district's efforts.

This localized approach aims to complement the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat's nationwide mandate, which struggles to maintain operations in every district. The DCE emphasized that the strengthened taskforce will utilize intelligence-led and coordinated operations to curb illegal mining activities and safeguard the district's natural resources.

The Assembly affirmed its dedication to providing logistical support for these operations, as part of a renewed commitment to combating illegal mining and promoting sustainable development in the Mpohor-Fiase District.
