Mission Improbable: A onetime Republican is trying to prove Democrats can win in Florida

LEESBURG, Fla. (AP) — Cyn Doyle, described as a politically cynical independent registered Democrat, listened to David Jolly, a Republican who recently switched to the Democratic party and is now running for Florida governor. Doyle expressed doubt over Jolly's ability to win as an independent before changing his party affiliation.

Jolly, however, responded by emphasizing his values and the importance of a strong economy and government intervention to improve lives. He was welcomed by various crowds in different locations, including a retirement community in The Villages and Hillsborough County, a Democratic stronghold. Jolly's campaign faces challenges in terms of funding, with opponent Byron Donalds having raised significantly more money.

Nonetheless, Jolly believes Florida's recent political changes and the impact of President Donald Trump's policies could create a more competitive race.
