Minerals belong to Jharkhand, land belongs to Jharkhand: CM

On Thursday, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren vehemently opposed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, which aims to limit states' authority to impose taxes on mineral rights and mineral-rich lands. The bill cleared both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha earlier on Wednesday and Thursday respectively, paving the way for its enactment once the President's assent is obtained.

Soren branded the legislation a "black Bill" and an injustice to Jharkhand's citizens, vowing a major protest against the central government's decision. "Minerals belong to Jharkhand, land belongs to Jharkhand; so why should Delhi decide on our rights and entitlements?" he questioned on social media platform X. Home to around 40% of India's total mineral wealth, Jharkhand fears significant setbacks to its development if the bill becomes law.

The Chief Minister warned that social security schemes like the Maiya Samman Yojana, Abua Awas Yojana, pensions, education, and healthcare will be jeopardized. Soren vowed widespread opposition across Jharkhand, from every district, block, panchayat, and town. He vowed to take "decisive and historic decisions" if the central government refuses to restore Jharkhand's rights and entitlements.
