Microsoft Is Combining Its Copilot Apps Ahead of a 'Super App'

Microsoft is consolidating its consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot applications in anticipation of a forthcoming super app release later this year. Both individual and business accounts will be integrated into the unified app, retaining the Microsoft Copilot name but sporting a redesigned app icon, according to The Verge.

The unified app eliminates the need for two separate Copilot icons in the system tray or taskbar. This technical step sets the stage for the upcoming super app, which will introduce significant changes to Copilot products.

The updates are set to roll out globally in mid-August, with mobile and web applications launching in mid-August and Windows and Mac versions arriving in mid-September. Users will receive notifications to download the updated Copilot app, with Windows Insider updates beginning this week. The exact changes experienced will vary based on the specific Copilot applications in use.

Existing Microsoft Copilot users will transition to the updated version, preserving their chats and content, while Microsoft 365 Copilot app users will encounter minor navigation adjustments, the new app icon, and access to the Copilot chat feature. Users with subscriptions to both apps will have their chats and content consolidated into a single updated Copilot app, but the text notes that chats, content, and data will remain segregated by account type within the app.

Microsoft emphasizes that enterprise security, compliance, and government controls will remain unaltered, and core Copilot features will remain free, although usage limits may differ. However, certain features such as podcasts, Deep Research, Group Chat content, Shopping, and Copilot Health may be temporarily unavailable during the transition.
