Michigan State hockey picks up late commitment for 2026-27 roster

Michigan State hockey has secured a late commitment from defenseman Diego Johnson, who will join the Spartans for the 2026-27 season. The move comes after Anaheim Ducks first-round pick Nikita Klepov opted to sign an entry-level contract with the Ducks instead of completing his college season with Michigan State. Johnson, who was previously committed to UConn, brings a wealth of junior experience from his time with the Penticton Vees of the WHL.

Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 180 pounds, Johnson has played in 129 games over two seasons, scoring 45 goals and adding 46 assists. Over the last two seasons, he has tallied 20+ goals each year, with his most recent contributions coming with Penticton in the WHL. Michigan State's acquisition of Johnson is seen as a solid addition to their roster, filling the void left by Klepov's departure.
