Métis Nation of Saskatchewan mourns death of former leader Louis Gardiner

The Métis Nation of Saskatchewan announced the passing of one of its former leaders, Louis Gardiner, over the weekend. Gardiner served in various capacities including as a provincial treasurer, Northern Region 3 regional representative, and local president. He was also a survivor of the Île-à-la-Crosse Boarding School, a facility that operated from the 1820s until it burned down in the 1970s.

Survivors of the school reported being prohibited from speaking their language and facing frequent beatings for doing so, which resulted in the loss of their culture and identity. In a statement, the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan remembered Gardiner for his kindness, integrity, determination, and lifelong service to the nation. They emphasized that his contributions helped advance justice for survivors and strengthened the nation for future generations, adding that his passing is deeply mourned.
